Please note that we are NOT dividing into tins/coppers/platinums/titaniums etc. for this year’s festival. We know that finances are tight, and we do not want you to have to spend your yearly budget on festival music. We ask that all choirs prepare the Massed Ringing selections, and as much of the other selections as their budget and time allows.

Clinician: Robert Ivey

Robert Ivey is the Minister of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC. At First Presbyterian he directs a program of six handbell choirs and seven singing choirs. Considered to be the “Dean of Handbells,” Mr. Ivey has been directing handbell choirs since 1960, and has toured extensively, both nationally and internationally. His compositions and arrangements are published by many prominent handbell publishers, and his two books, Handbell Assignment Book and Handbell Ringing-Learning, Teaching, Performing, are published by Agape.

Robert Ivey has been a member of the summer faculty of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, for the past twenty-nine years. His awards include a Citation of Merit in recognition of distinguised achievement in church music by Westminster Choir College and an Honorary Life Membership in the AGEHR.

Fred Gramann, a native of Washington state, began his early organ studies with Dr. Edward Hansen of Seattle, winning the student organ competition sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the American Guild of Organists while still in high school. While earning a Bachelor’s degree in organ performance at Syracuse University, he won first prize in the 1972 Ft. Wayne National Organ Competition and was awarded the Arthur Poister Prize for outstanding organist in the Syracuse University School of Music for four consecutive years. From 1972-1975 Fred studied organ in Paris, France, with Marie-Claire Alain, also spending one year working with organist and composer Maurice Duruflé. Fred earned a Masters Degree in organ performance at the University of Michigan during the 1975-1976 school year. He returned to Paris in 1976 as Director of Music at the American Church in Paris, the oldest non-governmental American institution abroad. He started a handbell program at the American Church in 1981 thanks to a gift of two octaves of handbells. The program has since grown to include four handbell choirs performing on five octaves of Schulmerich handbells, four and a half octaves of Malmark handbells, four octaves of Petit & Fritsen handbells, five octaves of Choirchimes and a growing set of Whitechapel handbells. Fred has had numerous choral anthems and handbell works published in the U.S. and is Honorary Associate Director of the Raleigh Ringers.

Arnold B. Sherman, currently living in Tyler, Texas, is a free-lance composer, co-founder of Red River Music, and Music and Arts Director at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, Texas. His undergraduate work in Music Education was done at Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland, and Baylor University, Waco, Texas. Arnold is the founder and Director of the East Texas Handbell Ensemble, a community handbell choir located in the Tyler area. In frequent demand as clinician and guest conductor, he has led numerous choral and handbell workshops, festivals and reading sessions throughout the United States, Canada, England, Japan and the Bahamas. Arnold has numerous choral and handbell pieces in print, and has been the recipient of an ASCAP Standard Award each of the last seven years. An active member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, he is Past Chairman of Area IX.

Phyllis Kirk, festival clinician and conductor, completed her undergraduate degree at Oklahoma Baptist University and did graduate studies at Oklahoma University. She has served on the National Board of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Inc., as Area Chair and as Activities Chair.

Phyllis serves as Director of Music at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama, directing a nine-choir program of music ministry which includes three handbell choirs, four choral choirs, and two recorder consorts.

She has served as handbell clinician and conductor for State, (including 39 states) Area, and National Festivals. She has also served as an instructor for Directors’ seminars throughout the United States and also in Canada and Australia, having taught classes which include: Bells and Chimes in Motion; Bells in Worship; Working with Adults; Bells and Recorders; Beginning Directors; and Instant Composing.

Anna Laura Page received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education with a concentration in piano and Master of Music in Music Theory with a concentration in organ from the University of Kentucky. Active as a composer, clinician, and organist, she served on the Music Committee of the Southern Baptist 1991 Hymnal Committee and has received the ASCAP Standards Award for the past several years. She has taught organ as an adjunct faculty member at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and theory/organ as an adjunct faculty member at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. She served as director of the Austin Peay Community Children’s Chorus in Clarksville, Tennessee for three years. Mrs. Page currently serves as Handbell Music Editor for Alfred Publishing Co., Inc. Her publications include choral works for children, youth, and adults, and compositions for handbells, organ, and piano. She is married to Dr. Oscar C. Page, president of Austin College in Sherman, Texas.

Guest Clinician: Dr. Larry Smith

Carillon’s founder and director is Larry D. Smith, lyric-baritone and Professor of Music, who is in his thirteenth year as voice teacher and ensemble director at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg. Smith earned the bachelors and master’s degrees from the University of Mississippi and the Doctor of Musical Arts from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. An active member of MENC, ACDA, NATS, and the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Smith serves as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the southeastern United States. He is past chairman of the Mississippi Chapter of AGEHR. He also performs as a vocal soloist in recital and oratorio.
